General information. All manipulations were performed in a N2 filled drybox or using standard Schlenk techniques. Allyl benzene, methyl vinyl ketone, pchlorostyrene, methyl methacrylate, diethyl diallylmalonate (3), and 1,6-heptadien-4ol (6) were purchased from Aldrich and used without further purification. cis-4Cyclopentene-1,3-diol and (+)-citronellal were purchased from Fluka and used without further purification. cis-2-Butene-1,4-diol diacetate and 5-acetoxy-1-hexene were purchased from TCI America and used without further purification. Complexes (PCy3)2Cl2Ru=CHPh (1) and (H2IMes)(PCy3)Cl2Ru=CHPh (2) and substrates 1,6heptadien-4-one (6), 1,8-nonadien-5-one (12), 2-allyl-2-(2-methyl-allyl)-malonic acid diethyl ester (15), 1,4-bis-allyloxy-but-2-yne (21), 2-methyl-acrylic acid but-3enyl ester (24), N-allyl-N-isopropyl-acrylamide (27), and undec-10-enoic acid but-3enyl ester (30) were prepared as previously reported. Substrates 4,4dicarbethoxycyclopentene (4), cyclopent-3-enone (7), cyclopent-3-enol (10), cyclohept-4-enone (13), 4,4-dicarbethoxy-1-methylcyclopentene (16), 2,5,2',5'tetrahydro-[3,3']bifuranyl (22), 3-methyl-5,6-dihydro-pyran-2-one (25), 1-isopropyl1,5-dihydro-pyrrol-2-one (28), oxacyclotetradec-11-en-2-one (31), acetic acid 4phenyl-but-2-enyl ester (33), acetic acid 7-oxo-oct-5-enyl ester (35), 4-phenyl-but3-en-2-one (37), and 3-(4-chloro-phenyl)-acrylic acid methyl ester (39) are known metathesis products. H (300 MHz) and C NMR (75 MHz) spectra were recorded on a GE-300 NMR, referenced to residual protiated solvent (resonances downfield to the standard are reported as positive), and are reported in parts per million (ppm).

In tandem or alone: a remarkably selective transfer hydrogenation of alkenes catalyzed by ruthenium olefin metathesis catalysts.

A system for transfer hydrogenation of alkenes, composed of a ruthenium metathesis catalyst and HCOOH, is presented. This operationally simple system can be formed directly after a metathesis reaction to effect hydrogenation of the metathesis product in a single-pot. These hydrogenation conditions are applicable to a wide range of alkenes and offer remarkable selectivity.

Designing organometallic compounds for catalysis and therapy.

Bioorganometallic chemistry is a rapidly developing area of research. In recent years organometallic compounds have provided a rich platform for the design of effective catalysts, e.g. for olefin metathesis and transfer hydrogenation. Electronic and steric effects are used to control both the thermodynamics and kinetics of ligand substitution and redox reactions of metal ions, especially Ru(II)...

Tandem catalysis of ring-closing metathesis/atom transfer radical reactions with homobimetallic ruthenium–arene complexes

The tandem catalysis of ring-closing metathesis/atom transfer radical reactions was investigated with the homobimetallic ruthenium-indenylidene complex [(p-cymene)Ru(μ-Cl)₃RuCl(3-phenyl-1-indenylidene)(PCy₃)] (1) to generate active species in situ. The two catalytic processes were first carried out independently in a case study before the whole sequence was optimized and applied to the synthesi...

Catalytic synthesis of n-alkyl arenes through alkyl group cross-metathesis.

n-Alkyl arenes were prepared in a one-pot tandem dehydrogenation/olefin metathesis/hydrogenation sequence directly from alkanes and ethylbenzene. Excellent selectivity was observed when ((tBu)PCP)IrH2 was paired with tungsten monoaryloxide pyrrolide complexes such as W(NAr)(C3H6)(pyr)(OHIPT) (1a) [Ar = 2,6-i-Pr2C6H3; pyr = pyrrolide; OHIPT = 2,6-(2,4,6-i-Pr3C6H2)2C6H3O]. Complex 1a was also esp...

From a Decomposition Product to an Efficient and Versatile Catalyst: The [Ru(η5-indenyl)(PPh3)2Cl] Story

One of the most important challenges in catalyst design is the synthesis of stable promoters without compromising their activity. For this reason, it is important to understand the factors leading to decomposition of such catalysts, especially if side-products negatively affect the activity and selectivity of the starting complex. In this context, the understanding of termination and decomposit...
